This semester you will be studying the American system of Government with a focus on personal Constitutional Rights and Responsibilities. This course is aligned with the Arizona Department of Education Academic Standards for the Social Studies. During American Government students will be studying the basic democratic goals, history, and the U.S. Constitution. Many topics will be explored: ( the code number in brackets corresponds to the Arizona State Standards)

The Principles & Origins of Government [ 1SS-E17, 2SS-P1, 2SS-P2, 2SS-P3, 2SS-P9], Constitution & Bill of Rights [ 1SS-E17, 2SS-P3], Political Parties [ 2SS-D3], 1SS-E17], Electoral Process [ 2SS-P10], Executive Branch [ 2SS-P5], Judicial Branch [ 2SS-P6], Federalism [ 2 SS-P7], Voters & Voter Responsibility [ 2SS-P10, 1SS-P17], Legislative Branch [ 2SS-P4], Supreme Court Cases [ 2SS-P6, 1SS-P17], Civil Liberties & Civil Rights [ 2SS-P8, 1SS-P17].

In addition, [1SS-P1, 1SS-P2, 1SS-P3]will be incorporated into all lessons and projects.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1) Explain the philosophical foundations of the American political system in terms of the inalienable rights of man and the purpose of government

2) Analyze the historical sources and ideals of the structure of the United States government

3) Analyze why and how the United States Constitution was created by the framers

4) Analyze the structure, powers, and roles of the legislative branch of the United States government

5) Analyze the structure, powers, and roles of the executive branch of the United States government

6) Analyze the structure, powers, and roles of the judicial branch of the United States government, including landmark United States Supreme Court decisions

7) Analyze the division and sharing of power within the federal system of government

8) Analyze the rights, protections, limits, and freedoms included in the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights

9) Analyze the structure, power, and organization of Arizona's government as expressed in the Arizona Constitution

10) Demonstrate skills related to the duties and obligations of citizenship needed to participate in America's government

11) Compare the United States system of politics and government to other systems of the world
