Hello
I am Kathleen Szczepaniak, Social Studies teacher. I earned my teaching degree from Glendale Community College and Arizona State University West. I have been taking numerous Graduate classes from Illinois State University, Chapman University,Florida State University, Colorado State, University of Arizona, and NOVA Southeastern University, as well as Deer Valley USD continuing education classes in an attempt to stay informed and up to date in my teaching methods and information. I am currently working toward a Master's Degree in Economic Education.

I have won numerous teaching awards, such as the Cox Communication Excellence in Education Award, DVUSD Teacher of the Year Semi-Finalist, 2002 Who's Who in America's Teachers, 2004;2005;2006 Who's Who in America's Teachers, 2005 Arizona Association of Student Councils "Most Spritied and Active Advisor Award," winner of the 2006 Street Law teacher Summer Institute with the United States Supreme Court in Washington D.C. and 2006 Gillette Economics for Leaders. In April 2007, I was selected by the U.S. Marine Corps to attend the teacher bootcamp in San Diego.
In 2008, I took both the AEPA Examination for Economics and for Political Science/American & Arizona Government, and I passed them both on the first try. I am now "Highly Qualified" to teach all History, Government, and Economics. In addition, I am certified in SEI: Structured English Immersion.
In 2005, I completed 1,012; in 2006, I completed 967 hours of Community Involvement both by myself and along-side my students. I never ask my students to do anything that I, myself, would not or can not do. Some of the organizations I worked with are: Students Supporting Brain Tumor Research, The Brain Tumor Society, Arizona Association of Student Councils, National Association of Workshop Directors, Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral, New Journey Center for Sober Living, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Maricopa County Board of Elections, Maricopa County Youth Volunteer Advisory Board, Packages from Home, Superbowl Arizona 2008, and many others. I ask each of my students to complete 32 hours of community involvement each school year which they do, reluctantly at first, but then they complete far more than the 32 hours. This demonstrates that the students are not only taking responsibility for themselves, but for their communities, as well!!! (Beginning in April 2006, I am beginning as a volunteer with two NEW organizations: the Maricopa County Health Department Emergency Response Team and the Arizona Centennial Celebration Committee of the Governor's Office. I will post more information on my duties as soon as I complete the trainings for the volunteer positions.) Finally, I am currently a volunteer on Spike's Volunteer Crew for the 2008 Superbowl. I have been working with them on several community service projets prior to the Superbowl, then I worked the NFL Experience.

I continue to strive for excellence in education, as my life is for my students. I am here for them to become successful, contributing members of society and responsible adults. As my students succeed, this is the best and only award I truly need.
